About Tandur

Tandur is a small town in the district of Vikarabad, located in the state of Telangana. Governed by a municipal council, the town is the headquarters of the Tandur Mandal of the Tandur revenues division. Tandur Mandal is surrounded by Yalal Mandal and Peddemul Mandal in the East, Basheerabad Mandal towards West, and Kodangal Mandal in the South. A few cities like Vikarabad City,Tandur City, Sedam City, Zahirabad City and many more, are the closest ones to Tandur. Places like Hyderabad, Gulbarga and few more destinations are must-see tourist attraction around Tandur. The general local language here is Telegu, however, there are people who speak Urdu as well. The town covers around 5.89 km2and has a population of 65,115 (according to the census of 2011), making this place a quite small town. In spite of all the odds, the town has good geographic conditions and has a vivid history connected to it, making this small town and interesting place of interest.

Geography of Tandur

The town of Tandur has an average elevation of 450 m. It is well known for its cement industries, stone industries and the production of redgrams (pigeon peas). There is river which is 4 km away from town, named River Kagna. That river is the major source for drinking water for the people. Tandur is well recognised for the production and distribution of blue and yellow limestone. These are popularly used for flooring, as slabs, wall cladding and other uses. The Tandur mandal has an association named Tandur merchants welfare association. It is a strong association of approximately 500 polishing units and those units would lobby for its 500+ members.

History of Tandur

The town of Tandur had great history related to the reign of the Pre-Nizams. It has been believed that the Nizams of Hyderabad often visited this town particularly for Hunting. There was a Business giant named Yusuf Seth who was expertise and experienced in arranging the grand welcome for the Nizam of Hyderabad in the town. The rich and distinct vegetation and diverse wildlife of earlier days was the major reason. However, as time passed by, deforestation on high scale took its toll and has denuded the area of wildlife and vegetation to a great extent. The Nizams of Hyderabad used to travel all the way Golconda to Tandur via Vikarabad which took atleast 15 days of Journey.

Stone slabs that were produced in those days, majority of those stones slabs were exported to various other parts of India.One can identify and distinguish the creativity of the people of those days by taking a glance of the unique, old houses built by them which are still well-maintained.The old houses of the town of Tandur were built of stone slabs and had mud walls on wooden supports.The vivid history of the town was expanding and thriving with excellence. Like the other developing towns, the old and new areas of the town are also clearly discernible. The old houses of the area are called old Tandur and new localities of the town are known as a part of new Tandur. The railway track divides the old part of the town from the new Tandur.

Connectivity of Tandur

The town has its own stop known as Tandur Rail Way Station. There are a few other stations nearby used by locals and passengers like the Nawandgi Rail Way Station. These small stations connect various towns in the given area of the Vikarabad district, thus making travelling easier and comfortable. The Gulbarga Rail Way Station is however, the major railway station which is just 87 km from Tandur.  The town of Tandur has well-connected routes via roads and bus lanes, thus giving the travellers an insight of the town and making the journey much more up-close and personal. The roads not only connect the various parts of the town but also various other towns nearby.
